Conversation cards for the daycare day

“How was daycare?”
“Fine.”

And then? The daycare day cards give you a place to start: small, concrete conversation prompts for parents and children. On the way home, in the car or at the dinner table.

Does this conversation sound familiar?

You pick up your child and want to know how the day went. The answer is “fine” or “we didn’t do anything”. You ask again and get a shrug.

Your child has probably experienced a lot. But a question about the whole day is hard for young children: they have to remember without a clue, pick something and put it into words, often tired and full of impressions. A single, concrete question is much easier.

Why it matters

Talking about the day.

Your child learns to sort experiences.

What happened first, who was there, how did it feel? Over time, these conversations build the ability to think about oneself and one’s own day.

Your child finds words.

Studies link conversations about shared experiences with vocabulary, storytelling skills and understanding feelings.

Your child feels your interest.

They notice that their small stories matter too.

You learn more about their world.

A new friendship, a quarrel, something they were proud of: children often only share these things when there is a reason to.

For every child

Especially for children who find it hard to tell.

Some children don’t speak much yet, are still learning the language or need more time to find words. Others rarely think about their day on their own. For them, the conversation often ends after the first “fine”, even though they would benefit most from practice.

The cards take the pressure off. Your child doesn’t have to sum up the whole day, only answer a single question. Little pictures on every card also help children who don’t speak yet, or speak little: they can show instead of tell.

How it works

Three steps. That’s all.

1

Print.

Download the PDF and print the cards at home.

2

Draw a card.

After daycare, in the car or in the evening, draw one card. One is plenty.

3

Talk together.

Listen, ask and share something from your own day. The guide shows how the conversation can continue and when it’s better to let it be.

Questions & answers

Good to know.

What age are the cards for?

For children aged 2 to 5. Children who don’t speak much yet can answer with the little pictures and point to them.

What if my child doesn’t feel like it?

Then put the card away. The cards are an offer, not a task, and a day without a conversation is just as fine.

My child always just says “fine”. Is something wrong?

That alone is no cause for alarm, many children answer this way. If your child changes noticeably over a longer time, for example no longer wants to go to daycare or withdraws a lot, talk to the daycare staff.

Do the cards replace language support or therapy?

No. The cards are a conversation starter for family life. If you are worried about your child’s language development or wellbeing, the daycare staff and your paediatrician can help.

When and where can I get the cards?

They are planned for mid-December 2026 in the Marosy Etsy shop. Follow along on Pinterest and Instagram to hear first.
